Just a head's up, it is time to get insurance.
It may seem like it's too early to start thinking about insurance, but your trek is only a few months away! This is a requirement for you to go on your trek so it is imperative to get a policy as soon as you can. Some insurance policies even cover pre-trip hazards meaning if something happens that prevents you from taking on your challenge you may be entitled to compensation; so we suggest getting insurance ASAP.
For a specific policy, check out https://www.worldnomads.com. Both their Gold and Explorer Plan are great and cover all of the requirements that we ask for in an insurance plan. They cost about $75 and $100 respectively. After a fair amount of research we recommend World Nomads because their plans are affordable, have extensive coverage and are a reputable company. Before purchasing, however, please check over the policy you choose to make sure it is suitable for both our and your own needs. You can find a list of all the adventure/sport activities covered by the Standard and Explorer here.
You are, of course, free to select your own policy should you want! We at Choose a Challenge only have a few requirements for your insurance plan. Our requirements for your insurance policy are simple:
- Find a reputable company and a policy that will work best with you.
- The policy must cover emergency helicopter evacuation, and a policy that includes adventure travel. Check to make sure that trekking is included in the adventure travel portion.
- For Kilimanjaro and Everest treks, you need a policy that covers treks up to 19,500 feet/6,000meters. For Machu Picchu, you will need a policy that covers treks up to 15,000feet/5,000meters.
We recommend getting this set months in advance so that you are ready to go on your trip leaving without any last minute issues.
