It's time for our Day 2 update...

The Machame Route up Kilimanjaro. Our #Kili01 team have now arrived into Shira Camp (on the left hand side of this picture), which is actually at a similar altitude to Barranco camp on the eve of Day 3 but before that, there is Lava Tower, at the formidible 4600metres ASL, which lays in wait in about 15 hours time.

Despite the best effort of the guides and porters on the trek, day 2 on Kilimanjaro always acts as a reminder that you really are on the side of a mountain.

The team will have awoken this morning, bright and early with the sunrise between 0600/0630 washed in a bowl of warm water provided, breakfasted and packed away their night gear before preparing for the day ahead. The mornings tend to be one of the hardest parts of every day, away from the comforts of home, flowing water, electricity, fresh clothes and the sun still working to fight off the icey cold of night.

The second day of the climb takes the team from 9,780 feet (2,980 m) to Shira Camp at 12,600 feet (3,840 m) passing through rainforest glades, the vast open moorlands and up to the Shira Plateau where the tree line ends and the vegetation becomes sparse. In total, the climb is roughly 4 miles (7 km) taking anywhere between four to six hours depending upon speed. Currently the team have arrived at Shira are out on an afternoon acclimatization hike preparing them for tomorrows exploits.

Today is a perfect example of why we love the Machame as the even on a relatively short climb you experience the constantly changing ecosystems of Kilimanjaro, the cloud covered views and the amazing, unique species of trees and plants some of which are endemic to Kilimanjaro. The team will camp tonight at Shira Camp with awe inspiring views of Mount Mero in the background. Mount Mero stands at just under 15,000 ft tall rides proudly above the clouds, despite being dwarfed by Kilimanjaro.

Until tomorrow....
