TOP 4 PLACES TO EAT/DRINK IN PERU
Happy #WorldFoodDay everybody 🍽 ! In honor of this holiday, we're serving up some of our staff recommendations on the best places to eat and drink in Peru for our upcoming Machu Picchu trekkers. This round of recommendations comes from one of our UK team member's trip to the lost city of Incas this past summer. Enjoy!
(1) The Meeting Place Cafe – San Blas, Cusco
I headed here just after arriving into Cusco for a quick bite to eat before exploring the city. It is not just a cafe that does great coffee and a selection of loose teas. It also does amazing waffles and milkshakes – so I am told (I am lactose intolerant so never tried one, but they looked incredible). It is a great place for a quick snack and to escape the (sometimes) overwhelming bustle of the main square just down the road.
P.s. I love that this place also helps the local community: It gives all the profits it makes to specific projects in the local area.
(2) Mama Africa – Plaza de Armas, Cusco
The classic backpacker bar/club and a must visit on your return to Cusco to celebrate following reaching Machu Picchu. It plays a mix of Latin and Western music and will have you dancing all night long, they also take requests! I challenge you to stay dancing on the bar until 5 am!
Top Tips – Make sure you arrive before Happy Hour finishes at 11 pm, and try the Bob Marley shots.
(3) Jack’s Cafe – Choquechaka 509, Cusco
Some of the team and I visited here the morning after we returned to Cusco from our 6 day Salkantay Trek (a few of us had sore head from Mama Africa…oops!). This place sorted out our hangovers out perfectly! The food portions are massive. I shared the caramelised banana pancakes (a must have!) and the Gordo breakfast dish with my friend. We didn’t manage to finish either plate!
(4) Wild Olive – Huacachina
Huacachina is a tiny place but there is no shortage of options to grab food as you wander around the oasis. Wild Olive is a lovely Italian restaurant with outside seating. You can create your own pizza and pasta, picking the sauce and the toppings. Perfect for everyone. They also have some amazing desserts and of course a happy hour. What more do you need from a restaurant?
